Evaluation

For this art project, we were given multiple themes. I chose ‘Hidden and Reveal’, from using this title I followed several different steps in enabling me to complete my final piece and name my project ‘Secrets and Lies’. My final piece was managed to be completed by having done lots of preparation and planning in my sketchbook and my online blog. For my final piece, I have created 8 canvases which all connect to one of my collected secrets. After having done a lot of research on the artist Joanne Archer my final piece is inspired by her work and her techniques. I have used a mixture of acrylic paint, oil pastel, paper, letters, books, newspaper and candle wax. Using these materials helped give my work more of an unusual look and using words from old books and letters also makes the work look more secret and anonymous; linking to the theme. Each canvas represents a different secret however, most of the background colours are quite similar as I wanted to keep a dark theme going due to the work being about people’s secrets and lies. I am happy with how most of them turned out as some of them look very powerful and show the message behind the secret very well. Some of them didn’t turn out as great as I had expected however, I am still happy with them as they all show something different. The canvases will be displayed in 3 rows on a wall or board along with a video projected on top of them. I have also decided to create a small film connecting to my work as it gives the piece more of an understanding; showing the audience that these secrets could have come from anyone or anywhere in the world and how we live in a world with so many secrets such as these chosen ones here. The video is very different from the secrets however, it is not displaying the secrets, it’s presenting how secrets and lies are found wherever you may be. The layout of my piece is also inspired by Christian Polanski as I really love the way he presented his work and how powerful and neat it looked when completed. Overall, I am really happy with my final piece as the canvases look really powerful and intriguing along with the video being played over the top.

Secrets and Lies Film

This is my Secrets and Lies Film. This will be projected onto my canvas work when displayed.

Editing Process

Here are screenshots taken during my editing process. I used iMovie to produce the film as this is the programme I am most comfortable with.

Collecting Footage

Here are screenshots taken of some of my footage I have to produce my short film. I will go through each clip choosing and cutting what would look best for my film.

Inspired Videos

Here I have linked a few videos below that I have watched for research. I wanted to collect and understand a range of ideas that could help me plan for my film and also understand what camera angles and shots work well.

Planning: Practice Footage

Out of my collection of secrets I have decided to use 8 of them.
  1. I told myself my curiosity was satisfied. I was wrong.
  2. I have stole from a shop I work at.
  3. Sometimes I think i'm gay.
  4. He was always in the headlines. I never got to meet him.
  5. Mothers Day 3 years ago...
  6. My mum's boyfriend...
  7. I didn't say anything because it was attention.
  8. Sometimes I imagine falling onto the track.

I will create each one of these secrets into a piece of work and also may include them within my film.

Inspiration: Gifs and Short Clips

I really like the black and white effect these gifs have which I took from the trailer 'Pi'. I feel the black and white effect gives the footage a more of a strange understanding of what it is showing; in my case giving the footage more of a secretive feel. After exploring and re-watching the trailer of Pi multiple times I am considering to have my own footage edited into black and white due to the contrast effect is has on the footage.

Video Inspiration: Darren Aronofsky

Darren Aronofsky was born in 1969 Brooklyn, New York. Darren has always been artistic and loved classic movies and spent his teenage years doing graffiti art. He then went onto study at Harvard University to study film (live-actions and animation). Darren has won several film awards for his senior thesis film "Supermarket Sweep". This helped him become a National Student Academy Award finalist. 5 years later (February, 1996), Darren then started to create a concept for Pi (1998). This received great reactions from friends and family around Darren which led him to begin the production. He then went on to further successes such as 'Requiem for a Dream' (2000).

Darren's film 'Pi' is about a 'paranoid mathematician who searches for a key number that will unlock the universal patterns found in nature'. Although the film itself has nothing related to my project his editing skills and camera work are very clever in themselves. The weirdness of the camera work is very exciting and eye opening as theres lots of things being shown at different paces. I especially like the trailer for the film as this itself gives an amazing view of what the film will look like. Im also keen on how his footage has the black and white effect. Although I would like some colour to be included in my film, I also do really like the black and white effect as although it looks very dull it also helps the footage become more interesting.

My Collected Secrets

Here are my secrets I have anonymously collected. Some of these secrets will be included in my final piece and also may be linked into my final video for this project. This is the starting point for my video - seeing what will work and what won't. I will create lots of short clips about these secrets - seeing how I could present them through image; see if they work or not.

I want my video to be quite secretive itself; not giving any clues or 'answers' to the audience. I also would like my video to present how secrets our contained in our world and society and also how they are kept hidden. I have looked at a website called 'Postsecret' which my final piece will be inspired by. I feel having a video along side my final piece will help the overall presentation and will be much more intriguing and exciting rather than just having the secrets on their own.

Practise Footage - Media Experiments with my Images

To introduce film into my project I started by filming my experiments I did with my first photoshoot. I wanted to show how I produced my work in more detail and also to remember how I used certain medias and showing why they did or did not work. This process also helped me understand how long I would need for the editing process of my footage, especially when it comes to creating my final film for this project.

I used iMovie to edit my videos together and filmed on my camera and tripod. Overall, I am happy with the footage and how the editing process came to together and I am looking forward to moving on in my project and including a lot more film within my work.

Below are some screenshots from my editing process and also the final video itself.

Joe Allam - Artist Research

As a starting point for my film, I decided to look at Joe Allam as his work intrigues me and his perspective on the world is very unique and clever on how he presents his work.

His website - https://joeallam.co.uk/

My favourite short film of his is 'Tokyo Rain Cines'  and also his blog about Street photography in Melbourne, as he concentrates on the sound surrounding him and the different shots/angles of Tokyo in its natural rain setting.

I decided to get into contact with Joe as I am so inspired by his work. Below is his response.

I asked him many questions about his work such as which camera works best for him when filming, how he collects his sound and also how/what he uses as his editing programme. His response was very useful for my work as it gave me more of an idea on what I wanted to do for my film and also how I would present it within my project.

Secrets and Lies

This is a small online sketchbook for my filming process and research for 'Secrets and Lies'. Here I will produce posts on what I have researched for my film and also the process of my footage being created (where I go and how I get my footage). Although I will be presenting everything in my sketchbook, I felt having a blog along side it will help me display more of my online process for this project - linking websites etc to what I have researched and how I have made process from such research.
